Copyright Matters
In March 2001, the Australian Government legislated to protect musicians, writers, production houses and voice artists, through the copyright act, for the use of radio and music On Hold within Australia.

This changed forever the way companies viewed the value of their ‘hold time’ – as from 2001 onwards they were faced with fees for the use of hitherto free commercial productions.

What this means is that on a sliding scale, the more phone lines the greater the fees for music or radio On Hold.

So in most cases it is similar in cost or cheaper to have your own Message On Hold production as it is to play CD’s or radio On Hold.

The Message On Hold company has its own music library, and all audio production copyright is included within its fees for services.

To get a perspective on this, compare the Copyright License Application and Fees (APRA) for radio/music On Hold with our music library built for On Hold customers.

APRA charge a substantial scale of fees compared with the fixed rate $8.00 per month for MOHC music

Copyright & Production Music  (commonly referred to as commercial tracks)

It is a copyright infringement to reproduce or to authorise or arrange the reproduction of a production music musical work or sound recording without a licence. Studios, production companies and their clients may therefore be liable for copyright infringement if a valid licence has not been issued for the use of production music.

To comply with copyright law, you should submit and pay for an APRA|AMCOS Production Music Licence Application within two weeks of reproducing APRA|AMCOS controlled production music in your production.

Please note: production music discs do not come with a built-in licence to reproduce the music on them. EVERY SINGLE production music reproduction must be reported to APRA|AMCOS’ Production Music Department and licensed appropriately.

APRA|AMCOS conducts random audits of its production music clients, focusing on reproduction facilities, to ensure that all reproductions are being licensed appropriately.
